Customer came in this morning and said machine wouldn't do anything. It has Print and fax installed, possible Lightning?.....
Update.....I went by this afternoon and found that the machine was for sure dead. When turnin on main power, the green led on front flashes one time really fast and that's it except for a flew led's quickly flashing on the main controller at the same time. Wall voltage is fine, I have ac power to where it needs to go. I have no dc voltage anywhere, so I assumed the main power supply was bad, of course, I swapped it from another machine, and no change. The PS from the dead machine also works in the spare. Now I'm really confused.. Does the DC controller tell the Main power supply when to start supplying 24 volts? I'm gonna try the DC controller in the morning. I'm guessing now...I would think if it was Hard Drive, or a Dimm somewhere, or even the Main controller, that it would do something, there are no noises or anything, The Composite Pwer supply only supplies HV, right? All input appreciated, I've serviced Canon for 15 years, and this is a doozy, especially when you're a one man show...thanks...
Ok heres the fun. start unplugging the low DC lines from the power supply and see which line or connector it is thats draining the power supply. then find out where each line goes to. Had one with a dead supply and it was a 5volt line shorted. So i would say something is shorted. In my case it ended up being a sensor wire got under the lens cover and the cover when replaced the tech didn't see it and smashed it against the frame. Look at the history to see who and what they did last visit for repair.
thanks for the input, guys. I will try the trick with the composite power supply and unplugging items. I did that on the DC controller, but should have done that on the power supply. I luckily have a machine next door where the customer doesn't care if I swap parts out to narrow it down. I guess these problems are good for us every once in a while if they don't kill us. I was just so baffled that I had no DC anywhere and it wasn't the main power supply. Wish me luck. What do you all think about the HD, Dimms, or Main controller? I really don't see those being an issue, do you? There was some lightning last night and it knocked out my dad's weight scales about 4 miles down the road. It was this way when they opened up this morning....but it seems to me as lightning would get the main power supply before anything...
There's power nowhere in any direction, as far as dc, ac is fine.... But I guess you are referring to unplugging components. Am I wrong to think that if you unplug all loads coming out of the PS, that you should have dc voltage on the pins or are there other factors? I know it can't be the main power supply, I swapped that out, could a pinched wire or faulty component cause all absence of DC?
It is a switched power supply. If it detects to much of a load on one leg it will shut the power supply down. by pulling individual components off the power supply it can aid in troublehsooting.

Actually it was a customer next door, who was more than willing to let me test on theirs. The boot rom and memory didn't do anything, tried unplugging components to no avail, but...
Finally..the Composite Power Supply is bad! Switched it to another unit and the problem moved to the other machine. Installed Good one and it's fine. It must have been shorted somewhere, it killed the voltage from the main power supply and that really confused me. Time to start the Weekend after 8 hours on that one! Thanks for all the input!
